Couples in the Empty Nest

After they got married, most couples had children. Through the years, they watched them grow and learn. They fed them, clothed them and took them to school. Extracurricular activities such as sports and dance lessons were included in the bargain. Many couples unknowingly grew apart from each other. Every minute they had to themselves was precious during these hectic years. Suddenly, all the children are grown and off on their own. Now the couple must learn to live together again.

Many older couples have difficulties once all the children are gone. The house is an empty nest, and they suddenly have plenty of time to spend with each other. Unfortunately, they haven’t really spent time together as adults for many years. They have been more like trains passing at high speed. They suddenly find they have no interests in common any longer. This is a critical time in a marriage. The couple must adjust, or their relationship is in danger of failing.
